TRINITY IN THE BIBLE
I. Introduction
This is a list of Bible verses that clearly show that the Bible teaches that 1) there is one God, 2) the Father is God, 3) Jesus is God, and 4) the Holy Spirit is God. Therefore, the idea we call the “trinity (tri-unity, three-in-one) is clearly taught in the Bible as the only accurate understanding of the nature of God.
This list is not exhaustive. There are many other verses that relate to the trinity concept, but the verses provided in this document are more than adequate for the task at hand.
Most importantly, please have your Bible with you and look up each verse you read in order to verify it’s really in there and that it hasn’t been misquoted. Also, reading the surrounding context of each passage is highly recommended because although most of the following verses teach self-contained truths, the context will solidify the meaning, and the more you read the Bible the better!
II. There is One God
A. The Law
Deuteronomy 6:4-5
6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD
6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
B. The Prophets
Isaiah 44:6,8
44:6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
…
44:8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.
Isaiah 45:5-6
45:5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:
45:6 That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.
Nehemiah 9:6
Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshipeth thee.
Isaiah 37:16
O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.
C. Wisdom Literature
Psalms 50:7
Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God.
Psalms 86:10
For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.
D. New Testament
1 Tim 2:1-5
2:1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
2:2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
2:3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Therefore, the Law, the Prophets, the Epistles, and the entire Bible plainly teach there is one God.
III. The Father is God
The New Testament quite often refers to a being called “the Heavenly Father.” The Jews of the day understood this Father to be the God of the Old Testament, the one and only LORD God.
Regarding this Heavenly Father, The Bible clearly in teaches that He is God. Here are just a few verses out of many:
Romans 15:6
That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 8:6
But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
John 6:27
Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
Therefore, the Bible clearly teaches that the Father is, in fact, God. More will be said about the Father in a moment.
IV. Jesus is God
A. Here are two Old Testament prophecies regarding Christ. Both teach that the Savior will be born into this world and is in fact God in the flesh:
Isaiah 9:6-7
9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
9:7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Isaiah 7:14
Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel [Immanuel literally means “God with us”]
B. God Appears to People in the Old Testament (the fancy word for this is a “Theophany” [Greek: appearance of God]
Genesis 17:1-4
17:1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
17:2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
17:3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,
17:4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
Genesis 32:30
And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
1. But the Bible tells us that God is Spirit and No one has Seen God
John 1:18
No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
2. So Who did People See when they Saw God?
Well, the Bible tells us that Christ is the express image of His [God’s] person (Hebrews 1:3) and that in Christ “dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9).
Hebrews 1:3 [Speaking of Christ]
Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
Notice, in Hebrews 1:3, the Bible tells us that Christ by himself purged our sins. This is another example of Christ being God because who can forgive sin but God? (for more, read Mark 2:1-12).
Colossians 2:9
2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
2:7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
C. Jesus was Worshipped by the Magi, Thomas, and Others
Another major proof in the Bible regarding Jesus’ deity is the fact He was worshipped (by the Magi, Thomas, and others) and even called God by Thomas:
Matthew 2:11 [Speaking of the Magi]
And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
John 20:24-28
20:24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
20:25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
20:26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
20:27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
20:28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
D. How can Jesus be Worshipped when Only God is to be Worshipped?
The Bible says that only “the Lord thy God” is to be worshipped! In fact, Jesus when talking with Satan quotes the Old Testament (Deut 6:13):
Matthew 4:10
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
And one of the ten commandments says:
Exodus 20:3
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Exodus 34:14
For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:
So how is it that Jesus allowed people to worship Him when He knew only God was supposed to be worshipped? The answer is obvious: Jesus is God.
To further drive the point home, in the John passage, Thomas actually called Jesus God. If Jesus was not God, He should have absolutely rebuked Thomas for speaking blasphemy. However, we find Jesus taking no such action but allowing Thomas to worship Him and call Him God.
E. Jesus is Separate from the Father, yet Claims to be One With the Father
Jesus also claimed to be one with God. This is interesting because it is also true that the Bible reveals the Heavenly Father as a distinct personage from Jesus. This is shown in countless verses, here’s one quick example:
Matthew 5:16 [Jesus speaking]
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
And we see at Jesus’ baptism, the Father speaks from Heaven:
Mat 3:16-17
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Here the Father is talking about his Son Jesus. Therefore, it is abundantly clear that Jesus and the Father are distinct personages. However, Jesus, in several passages, says they are also one:
John 17:21-22 [speaking of Christians]
That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
F. Moreover, Jesus has the audacity to say that if you’ve Seen Him you Seen the Father
John 14:8-10
14:8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?
14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
G. But Did Jesus Himself Claim to be God?
In John 8:58 Jesus appropriates a name of God for Himself. He says what God said to Moses back in Exodus 3:11 (I Am that I Am).
John 8:58-59
8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
8:59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
And once again, remember Jesus also on multiple occasions said He and the Father are one and if you’ve seen Jesus you’ve seen the Father.
H. Also, Jesus thought it Not Robbery to be Equal with God
Philippians 2:6 (5-11 for context)
2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
The previous verse also teaches Jesus was fully man and fully God.
I. Has Jesus always been God?
Did Jesus become a God as the Mormons teach? No, the Bible says Jesus has never changed and has always been the same:
Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.
J. Jesus Created Everything
Going back to Isaiah 45 we see that “God” created everything:
Isaiah 45:12
I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.
But the New Testament says The Word/The Son (Jesus) created everything:
John 1:1-3
1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Colossians 1:16 (12-21 for context)
1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
1:19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
1:21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
So how could God create everything and also Jesus create everything? Here is an easy inference. If the Bible says God created everything and then also makes it clear that Jesus, specifically, created everything, then Jesus must be God and the personage of the “trinity” that actively created things. The Father willed the creation and Jesus obeyed His Father’s will and created the universe by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, the Bible plainly teaches that Jesus Christ is God. He was manifest in the flesh in order to make payment for the sins of the world and is now seated at the right hand of the Father (. The Bible says that one day every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Phillipians 2:11). On that day the whole human race will realize what the Bible has taught all along: Jesus Christ is the very God who created all things, and by whom all things consist (Colossians 1:17).
V. The Holy Spirit is God
A. The Holy Spirit is a “He,” a Personage, and He speaks:
Acts 13:2
As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
B. He Seals and Indwells all Christians at the same time because He’s Omnipresent (everywhere at once):
Ephesians 1:13
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
2 Timothy 1:13-14
1:13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
1:14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.
C. Christ Leaves, but Gives the Holy Spirit: An Equal Deal
In John chapters 14-16, shortly before Christ’s crucifixion Christ comforts the disciples:
John 14:26
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
D. He Teaches All Truth
John 16:13-14
16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.
16:14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you.
Luke 12:12
For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.
E. He Can be Grieved
Ephesians 4:30
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
F. He is Called the Spirit of God
He is referred to as the Spirit of God all throughout the Old Testament and New Testament. Here’s one of many typical verses:
Romans 8:14
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Therefore, knowing that the Holy Spirit is a personage and is omnipresent, teaches all truth, and is the Spirit of God, we conclude that He, in fact, is God.
VI. The Trinity is Biblical
A. The Trinity is Taught from Chapter One of the Bible
Some say the “trinity” was a concept created by church leaders centuries after Christ. However, the trinity is present in the very first chapter of the Bible. God says in the plural form, “Let us make man in our image…”:
Gen 1:26
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
B. The Two Most Clear Trinitarian Verses in the Bible, 1 John 5:7 and Matthew 28:19
1 John 5:7
5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
5:8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
Matthew 28:19
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
VII. Conclusion
First, from reading the Bible, we must conclude there is only one God. Any notion of multiple Gods (polytheism) is totally unbiblical.
Second, we have God the Father explicitly taught to be God, and He also claims to be God.
Third, Jesus Himself claims to be deity, and both OT prophets and NT apostles declare his deity.
Fourth, the Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of God and indwells and seals every Christian and teaches Christians all things.
If we simply believe the Bible, we logically and contextually understand that “there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, that is the man Christ Jesus.” And He can mediate because He is God, and we can be victorious in our Christian lives because the Holy Spirit, who is God, dwells inside us, guiding us into all truth.
VIII. Witnessing to Cults and Non-Believers
1) Know what you believe, be rock solid in your understanding
In order to deliver the message you need to understand it.
2) Start with the “Good Person Test” (see Way of the Master series)
Our message is: you are an enemy of God and not a good person. God is going to judge, but today you can repent and be saved.
This is the message the Holy Spirit uses to convict people.
3) The main thing is to share the Word
Be ready in and out of season to preach the Word.
Convincing people isn’t our job. We just share the message.
Beyond that it’s between them and God, the judge of the quick and the dead.
And so you can have full confidence that:
♦ There is one God
♦ The Father is God
♦ Jesus is God
♦ The Holy Spirit is God
Therefore, the mystery of the “trinity” is Biblical. God is manifest in three personages, each distinct from each other but all being fully God.
