#5 – Jesus Christ believed in the Bible, and told us that it is trustworthy
As our final Top-5 piece of evidence that the Bible is completely trustworthy, we turn to what Jesus Christ Himself had to say about the Bible.
What did Jesus say about the Old Testament?
At the time when Jesus Christ was conducting His ministry here on Earth, the only part of the Bible that was written down was what today we call the "Old Testament." Generally, when Jesus Christ would talk about the "Scriptures" – this is what he was referring to.
And what did Christ have to say about the Old Testament Scriptures?
John 10:35 – Christ said: "The scripture cannot be broken"
Mark 14:49 – Christ said: "The scriptures must be fulfilled."
Luke 24:44 – Christ said: "All things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the
prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me."
John 5:39 – Christ said: "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which
testify of me."
But not only did Jesus Christ authenticate the Old Testament Scriptures – he also quoted from them extensively to make his points on many subjects.
Here are just a few examples:
Jesus quoted from the Creation story as a real event that established a moral principle:
Matthew 19:4-5 " And he [Jesus] answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which
made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?"
Jesus also quoted from the story of Noah as a true story:
Matthew 24:37-39 – Jesus said: " But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the
Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be."
Jesus also believed in the story of Lot, and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah:
Luke 17:28-29 Jesus said: " Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank,
they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all."
Today it's getting more and more popular to treat much of the Old Testament Scriptures as if they are just fairy tales with a moral… kind of like Aesop's Fables… but Jesus Christ didn't think of the Old Testament this way! He clearly taught that the Scriptures were from God, that they could be trusted, and that they were true and accurate histories.
If we treat the Old Testament Scriptures as fanciful stories – then we're essentially saying that Christ didn't know what He was talking about! (God forbid!) If we're going to say we believe in Jesus Christ – then we must believe in the Scriptures as He did.
What did Jesus say about the New Testament?
So what about the New Testament? The term "New Testament" refers to the part of the Bible that began to be written immediately after Christ's resurrection - and was completed within 50 years of that glorious event.
Here's some of what Christ said about the Scriptures that would be written after his resurrection and ascension to Heaven:
Matthew 24:35 – Jesus said: "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away"
John 14:26 – Jesus said, speaking to His disciples: "the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he
shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."
These promises cover everything that's written in what we call "The Gospels" – or the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These books contain the history of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ – and Christ promised that they would be recorded and last forever!
But not only did Christ promise supernatural aid in making sure that His words would be preserved forever, He also provided proof that the rest of the New Testament, to be written by His disciples, was also truly from God.
How? All the writers of the New Testament fist of all had to personally see Jesus, and then had to have their preaching validated by God's power.
Look at what Christ said about the Disciples who were to write the New Testament…
Mark 16:17-20
"And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen."
Christ said the authentication of those who would write His Bible were amazing signs and wonders! Power over evil spirits, the ability to speak languages they had never learned, to drink poison and not be harmed, and the ability to heal any sick person!
If the Disciples had NOT been able to perform these signs, no one would have believed the were speaking for God, and their writings would have been lost to the mists of history like so many other "religious" texts.
Yet the disciples WERE able to perform these signs! And Christ DID give them the power to authenticate that they were speaking for Him. Ever since the Bible was finished, no one has been able to perform signs like this. [God still heals people sometimes – but there's no one left who can heal any sick person they come in contact with, like the Disciples were able to do]
The bottom line? Christ clearly and repeatedly authenticated both the Old and New Testament.
We can choose to disbelieve in the Bible… but then we're also disbelieving in Jesus Christ – and if Jesus Christ isn't trustworthy, then we've got a much bigger problems than if the Bible is perfectly accurate or not.
Believing in Jesus Christ and believing in the Bible go hand-in-hand – you can't have one without the other.
And those are our top 5 reasons – but, of course, there are many more!
We encourage you to spend time reading the Bible for yourself – we believe that anyone who is honestly seeking, if they will spend serious time in the Bible, will be convinced of the absolutely supernatural nature of this book. It truly is the Word of God.
